  Abbey Street Special

The Abbey Street area of Accrington is steeped in history. Starting at the bottom of Manchester Road and ending when it becomes Whalley Road, this thorougfare is the subject of ghost stories and hidden secrets and here we take a look at how Abbey Street has evolved over the past 100 years through a series of pictures taken at different points in the street's evolution.

The picture above lends itself to an accurate chronology. Notice the union flags on display on the left and right. This

would indicate to us that a Royal Celebration was in progress at that time. King George V celebrated his Silver Jubilee in 1935.

Accurately dating this picture is a tad more tricky. The film in the middle is circa 1926. The bottom film, The Love Test, is dated 1935

but according to Halliwell's Film Guide Clara Bow wasn't in it, which begs the question if the film was known as something else later.

This picture is from March 1993. It says so on the back.
