OSWALDTWISTLE CARNIVAL COMES BACK WITH A BANG

After an absence of 16 years a Carnival procession will be travelling the length of Union Road from Vine Mill to the Civic Arts Centre on Sunday 22nd June, 2014.

No one knows why the Carnival stopped happening 16 years ago but the community of Oswaldtwistle are certainly getting behind the revitalised version. In January a meeting was held to see if there was any interest in holding a Carnival again and so many people turned up that the decision was made there and then to go ahead.

Since then other groups and organisations have signed on to participate.

Over 30 floats and walking groups will start off from Vine Mill at  noon on the day and proceed slowly to the Civic Centre.

When there, the walking groups will turn up Lord Street to continue up to Rhyddings Park and the trucks will park up in the stretch between the Civic Centre and Oswaldtwistle Mills so that their passengers can disembark and also head up to the park.

Once at the park they will be greeted by the sounds and excitement of a family fun day which will run from 12 noon to 4pm. In Rhyddings Park there will be two stages with live music and performances throughout the day; a fun fair; puppet shows and lots of community stalls. Headline act on the music stage will be the brilliant, The Itch. There will be food concessions selling tasty goodies from around  the world and there will even be horse rides available. In other words, there will be plenty to do throughout the day.

Support for the Carnival has been fantastic, with large organisations like Spar, Morrisons and Vine Mill and local shops along Union Road helping out  by offering their financial support. Local schools, and community groups too, are represented with most schools in Oswaldtwistle taking part in the procession and field events.

To choose a Carnival Prince and Princess, Heartfelt and Cherished photography have been running a competition and by the time you are reading this, the winners will have been announced. The lucky winners will ride at the front of the procession in open- topped cars (weather permitting!).

So, lots to do and see, let's make Oswaldtwistle’s first Carnival for 16  years a good one.
All we need now is the sunshine.
